Home from Hilton Head Island
Home from Journalism Camp
Home from St. Louis
Home from Governor's School
So it turns out, I've only been home for about two weeks this entire summer. One of which was spent under the influence of strong narcotics.
I don't really care. This summer away from home has been amazing.
And I'm ready for school to start back.
Les Mis and Wash U
July 23 2006
I saw Les Miserables at the Fabulous Fox Theater in St. Louis - it's the best musical in existence, no competition.
Eponine is still my dream role.
The day before we saw Les Mis my parents and I toured Washington University in St. Louis while my brother and sister went to Six Flags. Wash U was pretty impressive, although it doesn't seem like their English program is as strong as a lot of other good schools. The campus is beautiful and the students seem really interesting, though. And both my parents are alumni, which is the main reason we visited.
I also had my first college interview, which was more than a little nervewracking. It ended up going well, although when I get nervous I sometimes start talking too fast and I forget what I mean to say and instead babble on about nothing. I kept this to a minimum, I think. So that was good.
Tomorrow we head out to yearbook camp, with our pitifully diminished staff of six. Or maybe five. I don't even know anymore. We can't seem to keep anybody. In fact, we may end up taking one or two freshmen at the start of next year just to beef up the staff a bit.
I am in love with The Decemberists.
And also Once on This Island.
And also you.

Well, I put up about...oh, I don't know, 4 quintillian Governor's School pictures. Most people don't won't care, but if you'd like a glimpse at the most bizarre and wonderful group of people ever...you might check them out.
Here are a few of my personal favorites:
My roommate Brittney and I, in our everyday attire.
Rules for visiting our room.
My super cool counselor Amber.
My lovely friend Kethleen and her disclaimer.
Me and my suitemates...the best suitemates ever...at our closing banquet, which was very sad.
Bekka making a pretty face.
Tia, one of the nicest girls I've met, and Caroline, one of the most beautiful.
My room, in one of its messier moments.
And of course my dear Brittney again, doing her thing.
Heart heart heart,
Christina

Meet me on my vast veranda, my sweet, untouched Miranda
And while the seagulls are crying, we fall but our souls are flying
And oh, my love, my love, we both go down together.
teeths and such
July 10 2006
Tomorrow I get my wisdom teeth out. Blardy blar.
I think it's funny, we've only been out of Gov School 3 days, and the GSH 2006 email group has sent over 150 emails to each other. We are definitly the verbose writers, wouldn't you say??
I wish I could kidnap all my gov school friends and keep them in my closet. BUT, I can't, and now that I'm in the Boro, I want to talk to/see all of you, because I missed you. Call me at home or on my cell.
loove,

countdown begins
July 01 2006
It's the last week.....nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo....
We're making two GSH shirts tomorrow. "We" being just a group of us.
The first looks like this (the back is different for everyone):
And the second looks like this:
Today, we have a cookout, a swim party, and a baseball game.
It's amazing.
I love you.

It's not as bad as it sounds.

My GSH 2006 superlative:
"Most likely to hang a fetus on your door."
Dickinson and Whitman
June 21 2006
I love this being around intelligent people. I love deep, thoughful, intellectual conversations. I love being a girl - those occasional bursts of unbridled femininity. I love walking beneath towering trees to class. I love respectful people. I love spontaneous, unpredictable people. I love good first impressions. I love Van Gogh. I love warm, soft, delicious afternoon naps after you've stayed up until 2, two weeks in a row. I love second chances. I love chocolate chip cookies - chewy, of course. I love Sara Teasdale and William Blake. I love deep connections with people, which go beyond words. I love adrenaline.
Who is the better poet -
Dickinson or Whitman?
I. Finally. Got. A. New. Cellphone.

Now when you call me, I might actually have my phone on.
And I have text messages.

That makes me very extremely sad.

"Bekka stalks poptarts." -Christina
"I'm a pope hater." -Rachel

I have need of silence and of stars.
Too much is said too loudly; I am dazed.
The silken sound of whirled infinity
is lost in voices shouting to be heard.
Governor's School continues in its ineffability. I like it, and it's given me an addiction to independence. But I miss you, too. (Yes, you specifically). E-mail me or send me a letter:

howdy
June 08 2006
This very moment I am sitting in a computer lab in the Gooch Building of UT Martin, awaiting my yearbook advisor to arrive. The people in the room are debating what superhero they would marry (it's a yearbook girl thing). I just came from my room where I was drinking a cappuccino and reading Wicked, which I saved to read until after I had finished my first essay for English class, a three page paper about the autobiography of Eudora Welty. After this yearbook class I'll most likely go to my dorm and work on drawing an African fabric pattern for my art class, and then maybe wander around the campus for a few hours, or eat dinner if I get hungry (the food is good, but holy cow it's rich and fatty). Maybe later tonight I'll join my cool roommate Brittney in gathering around the piano to sing "Rainbow Connection" and Ben Folds tunes while all the piano players take turns playing. Then we might head to the game room for some Apples to Apples or Screw, Kill, or Marry, or maybe we'll just discuss politics, religion, and philiosophy. After that some people will head out to play volleyball with the Ag kids, but I'll probably retire to my room to continue reading Wicked and maybe eat a few Reese's Cups. (Last night we ate them while watching the movie Clue with our advisor) And then I'll hit the sack around 11:30, to be ready bright and early (aka 9:15) for my next class tomorrow.
And thus is the life of a Governor's School for the Humanities Scholar.
Interesting quotes so far:
"So...how exactly does fly fishing work? What do they use to catch the flies?"
"Brittney...I'm afraid my African loyalty pattern looks too much like a swastica."

I'm at Governor's School now and it's nice.
I can't really describe it much.
E-mail me at chrcwhit@utm.edu
Now, here's an interesting topic, discussed today in my art class, which I would like your opinion on.
What is art?
What isn't art?
If someone painted a white canvas white, would you consider that art?
The heat is on in Saigon
June 02 2006
This summer is going to be amazing. Already it's off to an auspicious beginning. All these storms have been refreshing, and the heat arrived at long last. Yesterday I was kidnapped, blindfolded, and dragged against my will to Chili's - a good experience. I leave for Governor's School on Sunday, and I'm EXTREMELY excited. If you have any desire to contact me there, I'll have an email and phone number (and address, for care packages <3) which I'll post later.
Have a good time hanging here in the Boro.
Love.
Christina.

Summer writing options
May 24 2006
I'm writing a play and a long short story right now, and I can't decide which to work on now that school's out. They're both psycological pieces about the female mind. Which is a fun and complicated topic, lol.
The play, so far untitled, is about two sisters (loosely based on Rachel and Leah in the Bible) who are viciously jealous of one another and must balance that jealousy by accepting that they each have something the other wants - children for one, the love of a man for the other - until one finally receives what she wants and the delicate equilibrium is shattered and tragedy strikes.
The short story is called "Regina Solaria," which is Latin for "The Lonely Queen," and it's about an ancient young queen whose royal husband -whom she hates for his violence toward her - is so jealous of other men that he forbids her to have any other human contact at all, save a mute servant woman. When an accident brings her companionship, she is so desperate she drives it away; when she gives birth to twins, she becomes obsessed with them to the point of disaster.
Which do you think I should work on first?
uno!
May 22 2006
In one day, I'll be a SENIOR.
In one week, I'll be at a Chinese themed wedding.
In one month, I'll be having fun at Governor's School.
In one year, I'll be graduamated.
I'm sitting pretty, and I'm excited.
