Defeated.

You know, I really don't want to be a teacher. I've gotten a taste of it this semester, especially the past couple days while I've been teaching on my own, and I really hate it. I hate their smug, stupid expressions. I hate their laziness. I hate their lack of effort. I hate the awkward silence that follows when I ask a simple question that they should have known by the second week of French I. I hate their complete lack of concern for their grades. I hate their complete disinterest in any culture other than their own. I hate teaching.

I know that there are great things about teaching - I keep hearing about what a difference you can make in someone's life, and how wonderful it is to inspire someone to learn. Well, you know, maybe I'd experience some of these wonderful things, but I really think I'm a terrible teacher, I think. I have no patience for the students who don't try. They drive me crazy! Over half of the time that I walk out of the classroom this semester, I feel defeated and frustrated.

As you might guess, teaching isn't going so well. My classroom teacher assures me that the lesson was fine, I did a fine job, and that every student teacher feels like this after their first lessons. I suppose we'll see after tomorrow. I know I have to go back, but I really would just like to pull the covers over my head tomorrow and stay at home and never go back a high school until my son is attending one.

You are NOT defeated! :-) Even if you make a difference for half the kids you are making a HUGE difference... many times while the ones that don't care stand out more there are the quiet ones that are drinking it in :-) Hope tomorrow goes better.

I truly believe that teaching is one of the most thankless jobs in the universe. Given the current anti-intellectual trend in this country, I don't see things getting much better in public schools.

Maybe you could find a job at some cushy private school that teaches French to second graders?

teach  1. to impart knowledge of or skill in; give instruction in: She teaches French. teacher a person who teaches or instructs, esp. as a profession; instructor. teachable 1. capable of being instructed, as a person;.
The teacher teaches, duh. It is up to the student to decide to be teachable. Don't expect to get through to them all. You will get through to the ones who want to learn. Whether or not they want to is not your responsibility.

I know how you feel. Working overseas in some of the places that I do (like Indonesia) can be incredibly frustrating. I often feel like I am BABYSITTING 3rd graders. But, about 20% of the folks here really want to do the right thing ... and they are the ones that I focus on. God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the strength to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

I am sure teacher is exactly right and you did a great job. Do the best you can, it'l like the sower when the seeds hit the good ground, the rocks and the bad ground. Some of it comes up, you just don't know where or when. Hang in there.

I say, you do what your heart tells you. God gave you reason to make decisions and a heart to decide. "Reason, your viceroy in me..." (That's from a John Donne Poem) Weight it in your heart. Don't just do it because you think you have to, and don't not do it because it feels bad. Love I give to you. (And I am glad the other day went better. I read that, too, but I decided to post this on here. It went better with this post)
