Michael Vick and Dogfighting--A Libertarian's View

July 26 2007

Let's say I bought a lamp for $100.00. While you think my money could probably have been spent better elsewhere, you understand that I have a right to use my money for whatever I want.  Now, I take this lamp to my house for the specific purpose of dropping it from a ladder.  Well, that would be dumb, now wouldn't it?  After all, wastefulness is a moral infraction.  But it's my right, for it is my property.  So I do it anyway.  Would you call the cops and imprison me for destroying my property, or would you respectfully disagree and maybe consider pursuing another friendship--especially one less stupid?

Why is Michael Vick's alleged dogfighting ring any different?  They paid for the dogs involved.  Sure, it's a stupid expenditure, but I'm sure we all have those.  I don't agree with dogfighting, but I feel like people have the right to do with their property as they so choose.

You also have to think about PETA's big involvement to me they are like the NAACP to black people useless unless it's a major deal involving the press. yes i agree on if you paid for it you also bought the rights to do whatever you please in your own home or property. and come people use common sense about treating animals but don;t give them "Rights" they are not humans just pets.

I realize that dogs are just pets and not humans, but you do have to consider the fact that those dogs actually have feelings. They hurt when you torture them to death. Let me throw another comparison of properties out there, except this time I'll use something that can actually feel instead of a lamp. When plantation owners bought slaves and made them their property and then torture them and sometimes put them to death, it was considered wrong and was eventually outlawed as we all know. How is it that slavery was wrong and that what Michael Vick did to his dogs wasn't?
