I have a 15' powerbook G4 and LOVE IT but I would advise you wait on the macbook pro. They are having lots of battery issues and problems with rosetta. Once everything is universal it will be as good as bought for me.

First generation releases are never best buys. I'm sure they will roll out updates in 5 months.

if that is your cliff, then it will be the best jump you have ever made in your life.

And, as far as my advice goes, I would go ahead and buy one... the battery issue is just speculative and even if it does have a short life, that is not going to change in 5 months... apple has not even released any info on the battery... and most apps will run in Rosetta... and run pretty well. Your high end apps and apps that are time-specific are having trouble... but soon more companies will be rolling out with their universal software, and you will be fine... I say go ahead and grab it... not much will change with the actual system between now and 5 months from now... plus, you can wow everyone with it before everyone in the city has one...

As I said before first generation updates are never best buys. If you look at http://www.mactimeline.com/ you will see that apple always rolls out significant updates every 4-6 months on all of their hardware. Just look at the powerbook and powermac section of the website.

As for the battery, Steve Wozniak (co-founder of Apple) has said he already has a macbook pro but doesn't use it because of the battery issue. It is interesting that Apple in the past has ALWAYS touted battery life of their notebooks yet only mention the word battery one time on the entire macbook pro website. It is a little hard to find as it is mentioned on the "complete specifications" page accessed only from the bottom right hand side of the main page. This is what apple says "60-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery (with integrated charge indicator LEDs)" That's it. Nothing more. They do not even provide the load draw of the laptop all of which is very out of the ordinary for Apple.

You two totally crack me up!!! I need a new computer and its getting to the point where i am just ready but i can wait... but not 5 months. I won't be running it to the extent you two do... I can really be content with a powerbook but if the prices are the same I might as well go with the Porche... right?

If it is something that you absolutely can not wait... definitely go with the macbook pro over the powerbook.

Apple upgraded the MacBook Pro today... Now their entry-level $2,000 MacBook Pro has a 1.83GHz Core Duo (up from 1.67GHz), and the $2,499 model has a 2GHz processor (up from 1.83GHz) with an option to upgrade to a 2.16GHz chip for another $300.

this is independent from the issues you and everyone keeps telling me about? OR does this fix those... doubt the battery but the Rosetta issues?

This update does not affect battery life or applications being universal. I was just giving you a heads up.
