George Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789.

In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving forward by one week, believing that doing so would help bolster retail sales in the midst of the Great Depression. This led to much upheaval and protest, causing some to deride the holiday as Franksgiving.
The U.S. Congress in 1941 split the difference and established that the Thanksgiving would occur annually on the fourth Thursday of November, which was sometimes the last Thursday and sometimes the next to last

Well actually, the mall wasn't terribly crowded, and I didn't see anyone shoving people. The people I saw were very nice to each other and believe it or not, the mall wasn't all that crowded. The biggest reason people wake up so early and get out is because that's when the best deals are, and if you want to get a television originally priced at $1500 that's been marked down to $999, they aren't going to be available at 4 in the afternoon.
