Calling all Bookworms...
May 22 2006
First off, I wanted to let MTSU academic scholarship students that have to do scholarship work know that I forgot one bit of advice for them yesterday: do not work in the honors college building. And the human sciences department is a good place to work. Garrett doesn't like his work at the LRC. Business office is also a good place. I bet most anything in mass comm would be good. But beyond that I don't know.
Secondly, I want all the bookworms to give me advice of what to read this summer. I am finishing up Pride and Prejudice and need more reading material. I'm mostly interested in classics, and also any good Christian fiction. No sci-fi (well, maybe some... like classic sci-fi), horror, or romance (like the written version of porn kind) please. Thanks!

Good classics and good Christian fiction really limits the list (simply because, due to various factors, the list for both is very short). I'll have to ponder it. If you have a LOT of time, Les Miserables is the way to go for sure, preferably the Signet edition. Hmm. I'll have to ponder.

I read The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway semi-recently and I really liked it.
Or, if you want a HUUUUGE book to take up a lot of time, I hear Wicked is a good read. (I haven't had the time to tackle that one yet though.)

You would really enjoy (if you haven't already) The Red Tent. It's about Dinah and how she's only mentioned once, and what could plausibly have fictitiously (lol) happened to her, plus back-story on her family. Very, very good read. :)

Graham makes a good point. There are a LOT of good books out there beyond the classics and Christian fiction-- not to say those aren't good either, but you know what I mean. I've already told you my Grisham picks, though he's written MUCH more than what I've read. I really enjoyed Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger; be forewarned that it's got some language, but it hardly takes away from the book.

Yeh, I knew it did, that's why I added it, lol. Cos it was the only one I've read that I wasnt sure if you had that I thought didnt stink. I hate the archaic writing of most classics. There's just something about English actually sounding like English that I cant get past, lol. :-P Good luck, I'll let you know if anything interesting comes to mind.

Pilgrims Progress by John Bunyan... christian, classic, and very good though it is written in Old English and some people would consider it a difficult read.
The Space Trilogy by C.S. Lewis... Christian, and very theological.
The Chronicals of Narnia by C.S. Lewis (not just the first one, there is a whole series).
This Present Darkness by Frank Perretti... Christian and very good, the sequel to this is Piercing the Darkness
There are more books by Frank Perretti that are also good reads including: The Visitation, The Oath, Prophet, and others that I have not read.
The Left Behind Series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins... this is a very riviting series, except for the last one, I never finished the last one becasue I couldn't get into it
That is what I can come up with off of the top of my head right now. All of these that I have recommended are christian and I have personally read and will vouch for them.

read Exodus by Leon Uris. It's very good-about the Establishment of Israel by the Jews in the early 1900s.
