Go Vols! At the expense of Katrina Victims and your own dignity.

October 11 2005
So let's be serious here: is it really cool to hate on Katrina victims for the name of the UT Vols? Well, I guess so...If that makes you feel good about yourself. I came across a nice little phrase tonight on an MTSU message board, that goes a little something like this...

A UT fan writes: "Maybe those LSU fans should move to a little higher ground so they dont get washed away, somewhere like ROCKY TOP!!! GO VOLS!!!"

You know, some people's families from Louisiana were displaced (ahem) by Katrina. Please check yourself. Yeah. Thanks.

-John

P.S. And may I ask, why do you go to MTSU anyway? If you're such a vols fan, shouldn't you just go there?

just to let you know, the Vols offered weeks before the game to let it be played here to help out the LSU team since conditions were so bad, and they were really rude and made comments like "we should just forfeit if we dont want to come down there, etc." and also, I dont know if you are aware or not but UT got special emblems put on their helment as a dedication/memorial/were praying for you things put on their helments for that game only to be greeted by signs teling them "Tennessee isnt welcome in Louisianna" which i thought was rude considering all the help we have tried to extend to victims. Tennessee and the Vols have done nothing but try and be hospitable to LA and its victims. Also, once the game was over, LSU students had broken all of the windows out of UTs bus that was taking them back to the airport. After going through all that when you have done nothing but be nice, UT AT THE VERY LEAST deserved a win for being slapped in the face like that.

I am in no way defending LSU, or what took place before, during, or after the game. That's no excuse to attack a large group of people and sacrifice your own dignity. But hey, that's their choice. And were you there to witness all of that? I don't know. Second hand accounts are always the most reliable. Not saying you are lying...but rumors are easily spread. Also, it was on a facebook message board - I didn't want to say names or be specific though.

What I'm getting at here is that it just seems heartless, when families such as my own, had to move (ironically enough, to Tennessee) because of what happened. If you want to excuse Tennessee fans for saying stuff like this, go ahead...

i agree.....if you want to be a Vols fan, go to UT-K. if you go to MTSU, you should support the school that is educating you. it is a SLAP IN THE FACE to support one university over the one that is meeting YOUR needs. this comes from someone who went to MT and works for VU. believe me, i KNOW.

The place i heard that stuff at was on the News. The only thing i was saying was that i felt offended as a tennessean who genuinely cares about the situation in LA, and would never make a remark like that, to be classified as "one of those fans". and i think i speak for the majority of vol fans. Also, inresponse to Lacy's comment, I grew up in Knoxville and the Vols are like my hometown team that i grew up with, partly because my dad went there and it is a family tradition i guess. and if oyu want to talk about having pride in your own school then maybe they should actually give us something to have pride in. I went to my first MTSU game my freshman year and was SHOCKED at how unclassy and basically trashy the mtsu players acted. They got in like 3 big fights on the field and later one was even standing on the bench yelling obsenities at fans. Needless to say, i left. If you are a college athlete, especially in the SUN BELT conference, you should not loose a majority of your games like mtsu does, to me that is a lack of pride on their part. After the way i saw them conduct themselves i would be embarrassed for people to know i was a blue raider fan. Oh yeah, and in case you werent sure, school is about getting an education, not about supporting a football team.

The bottom line here is that I, first of all, am not even a huge LSU fan. And Baton Rouge didn't even get hit by the hurricane anyway. But...it's the principle, that someone would dare make a rash comment about thousands, perhaps millions of people that were effected, in order to support their football team. The crap that the people at LSU did was probably bad sportsmanship because they lost. Most of them probably weren't even hurricane victims to be honest, because, once again, Baton Rouge didn't even get hit. I know not ALL Vols fans are like this, but this is not the first time I have seen this comment. And some people just don't understand the severity of the situation because they are so removed from it. As for the school pride thing...it's just ironic that so many people love UT, and it's only 2 1/2 hours away, and yet they don't go there. What's the fun in supporting a school you don't even go to? And you're right...so our players haven't had the best conduct. We could use a new coach. But this HAS gotten better over the past three years, as most people would tell you. But school is about getting an education. This is true. It would just be nice if we all supported the school we attended so maybe there would be a slight sense of pride here.
